Bible Memory Verse:
“The Lord will guide you always; he will satisfy your needs…” Isaiah 58:11
“…I am the Lord your God…who directs you in the way you should go.” Isaiah 48:17
Our memory verses this week is, “The Lord will guide you always…” That means that God will tell you where to go and what you do. Remember, He guided Abraham, the first person in the Jewish nation. The Jewish nation was God’s chosen people. It was from these people that Jesus was born into the world.
God had promised Abraham that he would have many descendants–be the Father of many people. This seemed impossible because Abraham and his wife, Sarah, were very old. However, Abraham believed God and he and his wife Sarah finally had a son. DOES ANYONE REMEMBER WHAT THE NAME “ISAAC” MEANS (he laughs)?
Today we are going to learn about a love story that is told about in the Bible.
In those days, a father and mother often found a wife for their son. When Isaac was 40 years old Abraham was an old, old man. He wanted to find a wife for his son, Isaac, before he died.
Abraham called his chief servant, the one who was in charge of all that he had. He said, “I do not want my son to marry someone from around here. Promise me that you will go back to the country I came from and to my relatives and find a wife for my son, Isaac.”
The servant asked him, “What if the woman is unwilling to come back with me to this land? Shall I then take your son back to the country you came from?”
“Make sure you do not take my son back there, ” Abraham said. ‘The Lord, the God of heaven, who brought me out of my father’s household and my native land and who spoke to me and pronounced an oath, saying, ‘To your offspring I will give this land–He will send His angel before you so that you can get a wife for my son from there. If the woman is unwilling to come back with you, then you will be released from this oath of mine. Only do not take my son back there.’”
Then the servant left taking 10 of his master Abraham’s camels and many other good things. When he came to the town of Nahor in the land Abraham had come from, he had the camels kneel down near the well outside the town; it was toward evening, the time the women go out to draw water
Then the servant prayed, “O Lord, God of my master Abraham, give me success today and show kindness to my master Abraham. See, I am standing beside this spring, and the daughters of the townspeople are coming out to draw water. May it be that I say to a girl, ‘Please let down your jar that I may have a drink,’ and she says, ‘Drink, and I’ll water your camels, too’–let her be the one You have chosen for Your servant Isaac. By this I will know that you have shown kindness to my master.”
Before he had finished praying, Rebekah came out with her jar on her shoulder. She was very beautiful. She went down to the spring, filled her jar and came up again.
The servant hurried to meet her and said, “Please give me a little water from your jar.”
“Drink, my lord,” she said, and quickly lowered the jar to her hands and gave him a drink.
After she had given him a drink, she said, “I’ll draw water from your camels too, until they have finished drinking.” So she quickly emptied her jar into the trough, ran back to the well to draw more water, and drew enough for all his camels. Without saying a word, the man watched her closely to learn whether or not the Lord had made his journey successful.
When the camels had finished drinking, the servant gave the girl some gold jewelry. Then he asked, “Whose daughter are you? Please tell me, is there room in your father’s house for us to spend the night?”
She answered him, “I am the daughter of Bethuel, the son that Milcah bore to Nahor.” And she added, “We have plenty of straw and food for your camels, as well as room for you to spend the night.”
Then the servant bowed down and worshiped the Lord, saying, “Praise be to the Lord, the God of my master Abraham, who has not abandoned his kindness and faithfulness to my master. The Lord has led me on a journey to the house of my master’s relatives.”
So the man went to the house, and the camels were unloaded. Straw and food was brought for the camels, and water for him and his men to wash their feet. Then food was set before him, but he said, “I will not eat until I have told you what I have to say. I am Abraham’s servant. The Lord has blessed my master abundantly, and he has become wealthy. He has given him sheep and cattle, silver and gold, menservants and maidservants and camels and donkeys. My master’s wife Sarah has borne him a son in her old age, and he has given him everything he owns. And my master made me swear an oath, and said, ‘You must not get a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, in whose land I live, but go to my father’s family and from my own clan, and get a wife for my son.’"
When I came to the spring today, I said, ‘O Lord, God of my master Abraham, if You will, please grant me success to the journey on which I have come. I am standing beside this spring; if a maiden comes out to draw water and I say to her, “Please let me drink a little water from your jar,” and if she says to me, “Drink, and I will draw water for your camels, too,” let her be the one the Lord has chosen for my master’s son.’
Before I finished praying in my heart, Rebekah came out, with her jar on her shoulder. She went down to the spring and drew water, and I said to her, ‘Please give me a drink.’
She quickly lowered her jar from her shoulder and said, ‘Drink, and I’ll water your camels, too’ So I drank, and she watered the camels also.
I praised the Lord, the God of my master Abraham, who led me on the right road. Now if you will show kindness and faithfulness to my master, tell me; and if not, tell me, so that I may know which way to turn.”
Rebekah’s brother and father answered, “This is from the Lord; here is Rebekah; let her become the wife of your master’s son as the Lord has directed.”
Then Abraham’s servant bowed down to the ground before the Lord.
The next morning Rebekah’s brother and mother wanted her to stay at home for 10 days or so, but the servant said, “Let me go now since the Lord has granted me success.”
Then they said, “Let’s call the girl and ask her about it.” So they called Rebekah and asked her, “Will you go with this man?”
“I will go,” she said.
Rebekah and her maids got ready and mounted their camels and left with the servant.
Now Isaac was walking in a field one evening when he saw the camels coming. Rebekah looked up and saw Isaac approaching. She got down from her camel and asked the servant, “Who is that man in the field coming to meet us?”
The servant answered, “That is my master, Isaac.” So she took her veil and covered herself. The bride covering herself with a veil was the custom in those days. In many weddings, even today, the bride wears a veil.
Then the servant told Isaac all that he had done, how God had guided him to find a wife for him. Isaac and Rebekah were married according to the custom of that day.

CHARACTERS: Jolly the Giraffe. Polly the Polar Bear, Leo the Lion
JOLLY: (enter) Hi, Kids! How did you like our story today? (wait for response)
POLLY: (enter) Jolly, I have a secret to tell you.
JOLLY: Can you tell the kids, too?
POLLY: Well, I don’t know.
JOLLY: Polly, it isn’t polite to say you have a secret to tell me in front of the kids. It makes them feel like you don’t trust them. You should have waited till we were alone.
POLLY: Well, I’m sorry…I guess I could tell them, too.
JOLLY: OK. What is your secret?
POLLY: I’m in love!
JOLLY: That’s exciting! Are you sure?
POLLY: Yes, it was love at first sight.
JOLLY: Usually real love doesn’t happen that way. Who are you “in love” with?
POLLY: His name is George the Grizzly Bear. He is so…….handsome.
JOLLY: Is he nice?
POLLY: I don’t really know. But he has a nice smile. Do you think he might ask me for a date? We’d make a nice couple. We’re both bears you know.
JOLLY: I think you should get to know him better, Polly.
POLLY: Well, Rebekah in our story today left her home to marry someone she hadn’t even seen. Is this so different?
JOLLY: There’s a big difference. She knew what she was doing was God’s will. If we are wise we won’t marry anyone unless God tells us it’s all right with Him.
LEO: (enter) Hi, everyone.
JOLLY: Polly, is it all right to tell Leo your secret? He might know him.
POLLY: OK. Do you know George the Grizzly Bear, Leo?
LEO: I kind of know him. He plays soccer with us sometimes. He’s a nice guy.
JOLLY: Is he a Christian? Does he believe in Jesus?
LEO: I don’t know. I’ve only talked to him a few times—mostly about soccer. Why?
POLLY: Because I’m in love with him.
LEO: Then you must know him better than I do. Where did you meet him?
POLLY: I never really met him. I just saw him.
LEO: You don’t really love him, Polly. You just like his looks. Everyone uses the word “love” so carelessly. Real love is shown by Jesus when He died on the cross for us before we even knew Him–even though we were sinners and did lots of things against God.
JOLLY: Would you die for George the Grizzly Bear?
POLLY: Well, no.
LEO: Come on, Polly. I’ll introduce you to George. Maybe he already has a girlfriend. May he’s not what you think he is.
POLLY: OK. But don’t tell him I like him. I’m shy, you know.
LEO: Don’t worry, I won’t. I’ll just say I’d like you to meet my friend, Polly.
POLLY: I don’t know. I’m scared.
LEO: Oh, come on. He won’t bite. At least not polar bears. Good-bye kids, Good-bye, Jolly. (Leo & Polly exit)
JOLLY: Good-bye kids. (dramatically) Maybe next week we’ll find out how it goes when Polly the Polar Bear meets George the Grizzly Bear! (exit)
