Bible Memory Verse:
“Far be it from you to do such a thing–to kill the righteous with the wicked…Will not the Judge of all the earth do right?” Genesis 18:25
“So then, each of us will give an account of himself to God.” Romans 14:12
Last week we learned about Abraham, the father of the Jewish nation or first person in the Jewish nation. Abraham was called the friend of God. DOES ANYONE REMEMBER WHAT GOD PROMISED ABRAHAM? (he would be a great nation and all the world would be blessed because of him-Jesus was born into the Jewish people)
Abraham obeyed when God told him to leave his country to go to a land he did not know. He took with him Sarah, his nephew Lot, and several people that were servants who took care of his many flocks and herds.
On the way to the land God had promised, the servants of Abraham and Lot began quarreling because there was not enough land to support all the flocks and herds. Abraham suggested they separate and he gave Lot the choice of which land he wanted. Lot chose the best land (like taking the large piece of pie) and settled in the town of Sodom. Later, however, God told Abraham that someday all the land would be his (Genesis 13:5-18).
Remember that God had Abraham he would a son when he was 100 and Sarah was 90. The following story takes place just before that time.
The Lord said, “Shall I hide from Abraham what I am about to do? Abraham shall surely become a great and powerful nation, and all nations on earth will be blessed through him. For I have chosen him so that he will direct his children and his household after him to keep the way of the Lord by doing what is right and just, so that the Lord will bring about for Abraham what he has promised him.” Genesis 18:17-19
Then the Lord told Abraham that the outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah was so great and their sin was so wicked that He was going to destroy those cities. Sodom was the city in which Lot, Abraham’s nephew, had chosen to live.
Abraham said, “Will you sweep away the righteous with the wicked? What if there are fifty righteous people in the city? Will you really sweep it away and not spare the place for the sake of the fifty righteous people in it? Far be it from you to do such a thing–to kill the righteous with the wicked, treating the righteous and the wicked alike. Far be it from you! Will not the Judge of all the earth do right?”
The Lord told Abraham that if He could find fifty righteous people in the city of Sodom, He would spare the city from the harm that He planned to do. Then Abraham asked God if He would spare the city for the sake of forty-five righteous people. The Lord said He would spare the city righteous people. Then Abraham asked God if He would spare the city for the sake of then forty, then thirty, then twenty, then ten. The Lord said that if He could find ten righteous people in the city He would spare it.
Two angels arrived in Sodom in the evening and Lot, Abraham’s nephew, was sitting at the gateway of the city. These angels looked like ordinary men. When Lot saw them, he got up to meet them and bowed down with his face to the ground. “My lords,” he said, “please turn aside to your servant’s house. You can wash your feet and spend the night and then go on your way early in the morning.”
“No,” they answered, “we will spend the night in the square.”
But Lot insisted so strongly that they did go with him and entered his house. He prepared a meal for them. But before they had gone to bed, all the men from every part of the city of Sodom surrounded the house. They called to Lot, “Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us so that we can have sex with (harm) them.”
Lot went outside to meet them shutting the door behind him, and said, “No, my friends. Don’t do this wicked thing. These men have come under the protection of my roof.”
“Get out of our way,” they said. “You can here as an alien (alien is someone that is not from their city, someone that came from outside to live in Sodom). You want to play the judge. We’ll treat you worse than them.” They kept putting pressure on Lot and moved forward to break down the door.
But the (men) angels inside reached out and pulled Lot back into the house and shut the door. Then they struck the men who were at the door of the house with blindness so that they could not find the door.
The two men (angels) said to Lot, “Do you have anyone else here–sons-in-law, sons or daughters, or anyone else in the city who belongs to you? Get them out of here, because we are going to destroy this place. The outcry to the Lord against its people is so great that he has sent us to destroy it.”
So Lot went out and spoke to sons-in-law, who were pledged to marry his daughters. He said, “Hurry and get out of this place, because the Lord is about to destroy the city!” But his sons-in-law thought he was joking.
With the coming of dawn, the angels urged Lot saying, “Hurry! Take your wife and two daughters who are here, or you will be swept away when the city is punished.”
When Lot hesitated, the men grasped his hand and the hands of his wife and two daughters and led them safely out of the city, for the Lord was merciful to them. As soon as they were out, one of the angels said, “Flee for your lives! Don’t look back, and don’t stop anywhere on the plain! Flee to the mountains or you will be swept away!”
The angels let them run to the small town of Zoar. By the time Lot had reached Zoar, the sun had risen over the land. Then the Lord rained down burning sulfur on Sodom and Gomorrah–from the Lord out of the heavens. Then He overthrew the cities and the entire plain. But Lot’s wife looked back and she became a pillar of salt.
When God destroyed the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah and the cities of the plain, He remembered the promise He had made to Abraham. He had not found ten righteous men in the city, but God did rescue Abraham’s nephew Lot, who was righteous, and his two daughters because they belonged to Lot, and God was merciful to them.
God will judge the earth again because of its wickedness. Remember, God gave Noah the sign of the rainbow as a promise that He would never again destroy the whole earth with a flood. However, God will destroy the wicked on the earth again: “ But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything in it will be laid bare.” 2 Peter 3:10. Read Luke 18:26-29.
However, those that accept Jesus as their Savior and Lord will escape God’s final wrath:
“For if God…did not spare the ancient world when he brought the flood on its ungodly people, but protected Noah, a preacher of righteousness, and seven others; 6 if he condemned the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah by burning them to ashes, and made them an example of what is going to happen to the ungodly; 7 and if he rescued Lot, a righteous man, who was distressed by the filthy lives of lawless men 8 (for that righteous man, living among them day after day, was tormented in his righteous soul by the lawless deeds he saw and heard)– 9 if this is so, then the Lord knows how to rescue godly men from trials and to hold the unrighteous for the day of judgment, while continuing their punishment.” 2 Peter 2:4-9.
The people that chose to be God’s children will be under His protection forever.

Genesis 11:31 through Genesis 19
“Just as it was in the days of Noah, so also it will be in the days of the Son of Man. People were eating, drinking, marrying and being given in marriage up to the day Noah entered the ark. Then the flood came and destroyed them all.
It was the same in the days of Lot. People were eating and drinking, buying and selling, planting and building. But the day Lot left Sodom, fire and sulfur rained down from heaven and destroyed them all.” Luke 18:26-29
“For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but sent them to hell, putting them in gloomy dungeons to be held for judgment; if he did not spare the ancient world when he brought the flood on its ungodly people, but protected Noah, a preacher of righteousness, and seven others; if he condemned the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah by burning them to ashes, and made them an example of what is going to happen to the ungodly; and he rescued Lot, a righteous man, who was distressed by the filthy lives of lawless men (for that righteous man, living among them day after day, was tormented in his righteous soul by the lawless deeds he saw and heard)–if this is so, then the Lord knows how to rescue godly men from trials and to hold the unrighteous for the day of judgment, while continuing their punishment.” 2 Peter 2:4-9

CHARACTERS: Jolly the Giraffe, Polly the Polar Bear, Leo the Lion
JOLLY: (enter) Hi, Kids! How are you today? (wait for answers)
POLLY: (enter) Jolly.
JOLLY: Yes, Polly.
POLLY: Would you be on my team in the spelling contest? I know you are a really good speller.
JOLLY: I would Polly, but are you allowed to choose who is on your team?
POLLY: Well, we choose by counting off one, two, one, two, and so on. May you could make sure you are number 4 if I am number 2.
JOLLY: That wouldn’t be quite fair, Polly.
POLLY: I guess you are right. Maybe I will just pray that you will get on our team.
JOLLY: Well, I am not sure God will answer that prayer, Polly, unless it is His will that we be on the same team. But I don’t know if that is His will—if that is what He wants.
LEO: (enter) I know what we can ask God and we know He will answer yes. We know it is His will.
JOLLY: What is that, Leo?
LEO: We can ask God if we can be on His team and He will always answer yes. Jesus has already died to pay for our sins. All we have to do is ask Him to forgive us and we know that He will and we can be on His team.
JOLLY: That is true. I sure don’t want to be on Satan’s team like the wicked people in Sodom and Gomorrah and die because they sinned so much and didn’t ask forgiveness.
POLLY: They went to hell. We that are on God’s team get to go to heaven.
LEO: And not only that, Jesus is with us every day on earth to give us wisdom and take care of us. All we have to do is ask Him and He will answer because He loves us so much.
JOLLY: That’s right, Leo. We might get on the same spelling team, Polly, if we ask. Even if we don’t get on the same team, we know that whatever happens is best because God loves us and knows best.
LEO: It’s good to ask about everything. You have the right idea to ask God, Polly. Maybe you should ask Him to help you study so you will be a good speller, too.
POLLY: OK I will, Leo. In fact I’d better go study right now. Good-bye Kids! (exit)
JOLLY: Good idea. Tomorrow is a school day so I had better go study, too. Good-bye Kids. (exit)
LEO: I’d better practice what I preach–do what I tell others to do. I’d better study because I’ve told Polly to study. Good-bye, Kids! (exit)
