Owner of the House & Watchful Servant – Teacher

Posted on July 14, 2008 by jerri

* The Parable of the Owner of the House
* The Parable of the Watchful Servant

Bible Memory Verse
"You also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.” Luke 12:40

* The Parable of the Owner of the House

Matthew 24:42-44
“Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come. (43 But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what time of night the thief was coming, he would have kept watch and would not have let his house be broken into. (44 So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour you do not expect him.

Luke 12:39-41
“But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would not have let his house get broken into. (40 You also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.’
(41 Peter asked, “Lord as you telling this parable to us or to everyone?’

1. Who does the owner of the house represent?
2. What didn’t he know and what happened because he didn’t know?
3. What are we commanded to do? Why?
4. How do we watch for His coming?

* The Parable of the Watchful Servant

Matthew 24:45-51
“Who then is the faithful and wise servant, whom the master had put in charge of the servants in his household to give them their food at the proper time? (46 It will be good for that servant whose master finds him doing so when he returns. (47 I tell you the truth, he will put him in charge of all his possessions. (48 But suppose that servant is wicked and says to himself, ‘My master is staying away a long time,’
(49 and he begins to beat his fellow servants and to eat and drink with drunkards. (50 The master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he is not aware of. (51 He will cut him to pieces and assign him a place with the hypocrites, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”

Mark 13: 32-37
"No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. (33 Be on guard! Be alert! You do not know when that time will come. (34 It’s like a man going away: He leaves his house and puts his servants in charge, each with his assigned task, and tells the one at the door to keep watch.
(35 "Therefore keep watch because you do not know when the owner of the house will come back–whether in the evening, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or at dawn. (36 If he comes suddenly, do not let him find you sleeping. (37 What I say to you, I say to everyone: `Watch!’ "

Luke 12:35-38
“’Be dressed and ready for service and keep your lamps burning, (36 like men watching for their master to return from a wedding banquet, so that when he comes and knocks they will immediately open the door for him. (37 It will be good for those servants whose master finds them watching when he comes. I tell you the truth, he will dress himself to serve, will have them recline at the table and will come and wait on them. (38 It will be good for those servants whose master finds them ready, even if he comes in the second or third watch of the night.

Luke 12:41-48
(41 Peter asked, “Lord as you telling this parable to us or to everyone?’
(42 The Lord answered, ‘Who then is the faithful and wise manager, whom the master put in charge of the servants to give them their food allowance at the proper time? (43 It will be good for that servant whom the master finds doing so when he returns. (44 I tell you the truth, he will put him in charge of all his possessions. (45 But suppose that servant says to himself, ‘My master is taking a long time in coming,’ and then he begins to beat the menservants and maidservants and to eat and drink and get drunk. (46 The master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he is not aware of. He will cut him to pieces and assign him a place with the unbelievers.
(47 That servant who knows his master’s will and does not get ready or does not do what his master wants will be beaten with many blows. From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked.”

1. Who does the man going on a journey (owner of the house) represent in Mark 13:32-37 and the master in Matthew 24:45-51 and Luke 12:35-38, 41-48 represent?
2. Who does the manager and servants represent?
3. What does the wicked servant do when his master is gone? Why does he do this?
4. What does the faithful and wise servant do when his master is gone?
5. When will the master come back?
6. What does Luke 12:46-48 mean? How does it help explain God’s judgment?
Luke 12:46-48
“The master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he is not aware of.
“cut him to pieces…beaten with many blows…beaten with few blows…" Three degrees of punishment that the judge will mete out in proportion to both the privileges each person has enjoyed and his responses to those privileges (see Romans 2:12-16).” NIV Study Bible
Romans 2:12-16
“All who sin part from the law will also perish apart from the law, and all who sin under the law will be judged by the law. (13 For it is not those who hear the law that are righteous in God’s sight, but it is those who obey the law who will be declared righteous. (14 (Indeed, when Gentiles, who do not have the law, do by nature things required by the law, they are a law for themselves, even though they do not have the law, since they show that the requirements of the law are written on their hearts, their consciences also bearing witness, and their thoughts now accusing, now defending them.) (16 This will take place on the day when God will judge men’s secrets through Jesus Christ, as our gospel declares.”

7. What is the main teaching of Jesus’ in this parable?

Thanks for this blog as you raise good questions and answers. We can know more as we approach the end here in Nissan 2021. There are so many signs (including the servant mentioned in Matt 24: 45 helping some of us servants in the household understand the events and timing of the end. The book of truth was promised to be open for us at the end, helping to guide us to HIS soon return and rapture of HIS people. Some good reading for better under standing of these endtime parables is daniel11truth and sabine shares. Thanks for this blog and allowing my post.
