Bible Memory Verse:
“But Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord.” Genesis 6:8
“…Noah was a righteous man…and he walked with God.” Genesis 6:9
“Noah did everything just as God commanded him.” Genesis 6:22
“And Noah did all that the Lord commanded him.” Genesis 7:5
WHAT IS SIN? Sin is not obeying God. Every time we lie, steal, say unkind words to someone else, even think unkind thoughts we are sinning. WHAT HAPPENED BECAUSE ADAM AND EVE CHOSE TO SIN?
Have a volunteer to hold a jar of water. Put drop of food coloring into a jar of water. WHAT HAPPENS TO THE WATER? Every drop of water will change color.
The sin that Adam and Eve brought into the world worked the same way. It spread through men’s hearts so that everything they thought and everything they did was spoiled by sin.
Man began to increase on the earth and they were corrupt and violent. The Lord saw how great man’s wickedness on the earth had become, and that every inclination of the thoughts of his heart was evil all the time. The Lord was grieved that He had made man on the earth and His heart was filled with pain. So He said, “I will wipe out mankind, whom I have created, from the face of the earth–men and animals…and birds of the air–for I am grieved that I have made them.” Genesis 6:7
But there was one man that found favor in the eyes of the Lord. “But Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord.” Genesis 6:8 Noah chose to obey God. He believed what God said. The Bible says, “…Noah was a righteous man, blameless among the people of his time and he walked with God.” Genesis 6:9" Noah walked with God. That means he prayed to God. He talked to God and God talked to him and helped him every day.
One day God spoke to Noah, "I am going to put an end to all people, because the earth is filled with violence because of them. I am going to destroy both them and the earth. So make yourself an ark of cypress wood; make rooms in it and coat it with pitch both inside and out. This is how you are to build it: The ark is to be 450′ long, 75′ wide and 45’ high. Make a roof for it and finish the roof within 18" from the top. Put a door in the side of the ark and make lower, middle and upper decks. I am going to bring floodwaters on the earth to destroy all life under the heavens. Everything on earth will perish…Go into the ark, you and your whole family because I have found you righteous in this generation.” Noah was to bring a male and female of every kind of creature. He was to bring seven of a few kinds of animals like cattle and sheep into the ark. He was also to take every kind of food that can be eaten.
Noah believed God. He knew God would keep His word and the flood would come. “Noah did everything just as God commanded him.” Genesis 6:22 Because he believed God Noah did everything God told him to do.
So Noah obediently began to build the boat. It took many, many years. Noah carefully followed God’s directions. He spent many hours planning the boat and then many years getting the supplies. He had no huge saws to fell the trees and lumberyards from which to order wood. He had only his three sons to help him. The other people did not believe that God would send a flood. They though Noah was foolish.
But God helped Noah every day. Noah kept working until he had finished the ark. Then he gathered food and supplies for his family. “And Noah did all that the Lord commanded him.” Genesis 7:5
Noah was six hundred years old when the floodwaters came upon the earth. Noah and his wife and his sons, Shem, Ham and Japheth and his son’s wives entered the ark to escape the flood. Pairs of animals, birds and all creatures came to Noah and entered the ark. Then the Lord shut the door.
Just as God had promised, rain fell on the earth. It fell for forty days and forty nights. The waters lifted the ark high above the earth and the ark floated on the surface of the water. All the high mountains were covered to a depth of more than twenty feet. Every living thing perished. Only Noah was left and those with him in the ark.
At last the rains stopped. The water steadily went down. After one hundred and fifty days the ark came to rest on the mountain of Ararat. After forty days Noah opened the window he had made in the ark and sent out a raven and it kept flying back and forth. Then he sent out a dove to see if the water had gone from the surface of the earth. But the dove could find no place to set its feet so it returned to Noah. After seven days Noah again sent the dove out from the ark. When the dove returned to him in the evening a freshly plucked olive leaf was in its beak! Noah waited seven more days before sending the dove out, but this time it did not return to him.
When Noah removed the covering from the ark, he saw that the earth was dry. Soon God told him to come out from the ark. After Noah and his family and the animals have come off the art, Noah built an altar to the Lord to thank, praise and worship Him.
God promised that He would never again destroy the whole earth by a flood. He promised that summer would follow spring, harvest time would follow summer, and then winter would come–as long as the earth continued. As a sign that He would keep His promise, God put a beautiful rainbow in the sky. “Whenever the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will see it and remember.” Genesis 9:16 Even today, when the sun shines through the raindrops in the air, a rainbow is painted in the sky. The rainbow comes after water in the sky as the rainbow came after the flood. It helps us to remember our faithful God who always keeps His promises to His children. He promises to forgive sin, to be with His children always, to take care of them, to answer their prayers, and, some day, to take them to be with Him in heaven.
QUESTIONS:
1. Why did God destroy the world?
2. Why did He save Noah?
3. What people were on the ark?
4. What mountain did the ark came to rest after the flood?
5. What did Noah build in order to worship God?
6. What is the sign God gave Noah to show that He always keeps His promises?
Genesis 5:27-9:29
“After the flood Noah lived 350 years. Altogether, Noah lived 950 years, and then he died.” Genesis 9:28-29
“To me this is like the days of Noah, when I swore that the waters of Noah would never again cover the earth. So now I have sworn not to be angry with you, never to rebuke you again.” Isaiah 54:9
“even if these three men–Noah, Daniel and Job–were in it, they could save only themselves by their righteousness, declares the Sovereign Lord…” Ezekiel 14:14,20
“As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. For in the days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day Noah entered the ark; and they knew nothing about what would happen until the flood came and took them all away. That is how it will be at the coming of the Son of Man.” Matthew 24:37-39 (Luke 17:26-27)
“who disobeyed long ago when God waited patiently in the days of Noah when the ark was being built. In it only a few people, eight in all, were saved through water”1 Peter 3:18-22
“First of all, you must understand that in the last days scoffers will come, scoffing and following their own evil desires. They will say, ‘Where is this coming he promised? Ever since our fathers died, everything goes on as it has since the beginning of creation. But they deliberately forget that long ago by God’s word the heavens existed and the earth was formed out of water and by water. By these waters also the world at that time was deluged and destroyed.
By the same word the present heavens and earth are reserved for fire, being kept for the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men.
But do not forget this one thing dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day. The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.
But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything in it will be laid bare.” 2 Peter 3:3-10

c. Place to make offerings to God
Genesis 9:7-17
1. What promise did God give Noah?
2. What was the sign of the covenant between God and Noah?
Bible scholars believe Noah worked on the ark 120 years. The ark was the length of one and one-half football fields and as high as a 4-story building. It was six times longer than it was high. Modern shipbuilders still use this ratio.
The ark wasn’t meant to sail, but merely to float. Instead of having slopping sides, it was like a big barn or box. Almost half of its height was underwater making it almost impossible to capsize. This also increased its carrying capacity to one-third. Its gross tonnage was about the same as metal, ocean-going vessels of today. This gave it the carrying capacity of about 522 railroad stock cars. Some guess it carried 35,000 to 45,000 animals. The ark was probably the first boat ever built and so a great curiosity to everyone.
Bible Memory Verse:
“And Noah did all that the Lord commanded him.” Genesis 7:5
CHARACTERS: Jolly the Giraffe, Polly the Polar Bear, Leo the Lion
POLLY: (enter & look around. Speak quickly & loudly) Hi. (Look around again & exit)
JOLLY: (enter) Come out, Polly. Don’t be shy. Kids, say hi to Polly. (wait for response) Polly! Polly!
POLLY: (slowly come out & speak quickly and softly) Hi.
JOLLY: Hi, kids. How are you today? (wait for response) Did you like the story of Noah? (wait for response)
LEO: (enter) Hi kids! (wait for response)
JOLLY: Did you like the story about Noah, Leo?
LEO: I always like stories from the Bible. We know they are true. Other stories are not always true or not completely true, but the Bible is always true. It’s God’s Word, you know.
JOLLY: And we can always learn about God from the stories in the Bible. For instance, what do we learn about God from the story of Noah.
LEO: It shows me that even though God punishes the wicked, He also protects those who love Him.
JOLLY: And God is patient. Look at how long He waited for the wicked to turn from their sins. Noah took a long long time building the ark and he probably told people about God all the time he was building it.
LEO: The Bible says, “The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish but everyone to come to repentance.” 2 Peter 3:9 That means God doesn’t want anyone to go To hell.
POLLY: (quickly & loudly) God loves everyone!
JOLLY: That’s right Polly. He loves everyone so much He died for their sins so they wouldn’t have to. He was the only one who could die for people’s sin because He is the only one who never sinned.
LEO: Sin is disobeying God. Even though Jesus is the God the Son, He never disobeyed God the Father and even died a horrible death on the cross because God the Father wanted Him to.
JOLLY: And just think how hard it must have been for God the Father to send His only Son that He loved so much and never sinned at all to die for men that sin lots.
POLLY: If God loves us so much, why do some people go to hell?
LEO: Because they don’t want to believe in Jesus even though He loves us so much. He doesn’t ask us to do anything that would harm us. In fact, He loves us so much that He doesn’t make us do anything, even though He is God. He wants us to obey Him because we love Him.
POLLY: I want to be like Noah.
JOLLY: Why is that, Polly?
POLLY: Because he obeyed God.
LEO: That’s right. He obeyed God when almost no one else did. He walked with God. That means he talked to God and God talked to him.
JOLLY: Kids, why don’t we try to be like Noah this week? Let’s talk to God and listen to Him talk to us. Next week we are going to learn about another man who was called a friend of God. Wouldn’t it be great to be a friend of God? And–we can be. Good-bye, Kids.
LEO: Good-bye everyone.
POLLY: (quickly & loudly) Good-bye!
