Bible Memory Verse:
“Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” 1 Samuel 16:7
“…the righteous are as bold as a lion.” Proverbs 28:1
“…be strong in the Lord and in His mighty power.” Ephesians 6:10
WHO ARE THE ISRAELITES? (nation from which Jesus was born) God choose these people, not because they were better than other people or because He loved them more, but because He needed a special people through whom His Son Jesus could be born. Jesus would come to bless (make happy) all people because God loves all people.
God chose them because Abraham. the first person or the father of the Israelite people, was a man of great faith. He believed God even when what God promised seemed impossible. God made a covenant or lasting agreement with Abraham that He would make a great nation from Abraham.
WHAT DOES GENEALOGY MEAN" (people you are descended from, your ancestors, your grandfather and great grandfather) Today we are going to talk about David who, besides Abraham, was another ancestor of Jesus. Many times the Bible says that Jesus was from the line of David or the house of David or a descendant of King David.
The Israelite people asked to be ruled by a king. God was not pleased when they asked this. The people wanted a king because they wanted to be like the other nations who were not serving God. Although God did not like this, He let the people have what they wanted. God had His prophet Samuel chose a king named Saul. He had Samuel anoint Saul or pour oil on him as a symbol that the Holy Spirit would come on him to be king.
King Saul was disobedient, so after several years God chose another man to be king.
The Lord said to Samuel, “Fill your horn with oil, I am sending you to Jesse of Bethlehem. I have chosen one of his sons to be king.” 1 Samuel 16:1
Samuel went to Bethlehem and prepared a sacrifice to the Lord. He invited Jesse and his sons. When they arrived Samuel saw Jesse’s oldest son and thought, “Surely the Lord’s anointed stands here before the Lord.” 1 Samuel 16:6
But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”
Jesse had seven of his sons pass before Samuel, but Samuel said to him, “The Lord has not chosen these. Are these all the sons you have?”
“There is still the youngest,” Jesse answered, “but he is tending the sheep.”
Samuel said, “Send for him. We will not sit down until he arrives.” They waited for David to arrive before they ate the special meal prepared to honor the Lord.
So Jesse had David, his youngest son, brought in from tending the sheep. The Bible says that David had a fine appearance and handsome features.
Then the Lord said, “Rise and anoint him; he is the one.” 1 Samuel 16:12
So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the presence of his brothers, and from that day on the Spirit of the Lord came upon David in power.
Before David became king, and Saul was still the king of Israel, the Israelites were fighting the Philistines. The Philistines had been an enemy of the Israelites a long time. The Israelites were on a hill on one side of a valley, and the Philistines were on a hill on the other side of the valley. The valley is where they fought. One of the Philistines was a huge man, over 9 feet tall, named Goliath. Twice a day, Goliath would come out and shout over to the Israelites: "Choose a man and have him come down to me. If he is able to fight and kill me, we will become your subjects, but if I kill him, you will become our subjects and serve us." 1 Samuel 17:8-9 When King Saul and the Israelites heard this, they were terrified. No one dared fight Goliath.
David’s three older brothers were with King Saul and his men fighting against the Philistines. David was at home taking care of his father’s sheep.
One day David’s father sent David to see how his brothers were doing. He sent him with a large amount of grain, bread and cheese for his brothers and the Israelite army.
Early in the morning David left. When he came to the army of the Israelites and was talking to his brothers, Goliath came out. When the Israelites saw Goliath, they all ran in great fear, but David said, "…Who is this…Philistine that he should speak against the armies of the living God?” 1 Samuel 17:26
When David was heard saying this, it was reported to King Saul, and King Saul sent for David.
David said to King Saul, "Let no one lose heart on account of this Philistine; I will go and fight him.” 1 Samuel 17:32
King Saul said, "You are not able to go out against this Philistine and fight him. You are only a boy, and he has been a fighting man from his youth." 1 Samuel 17:33
David said, "Your servant has been keeping his father’s sheep. When a lion or a bear came and carried off a sheep from the flock, I went after it, struck it and rescued the sheep from its mouth. When the lion or bear turned on me, I…killed it…The Lord who delivered me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine." 1 Samuel 17:34-37
King Saul said, "Go, and the Lord be with you."
David tried to put on the armor King Saul wore when he fought, but he said, “I cannot go in these because I am not used to them.” Instead he wore his own clothes and chose five smooth stones. With his sling and the stones, he started walking towards Goliath.
Goliath kept coming closer to David. He looked him over and saw that he was only a boy. He said, "Am I a dog that you come at me with sticks? Come here, and I will give your flesh to the birds of the air and the beasts of the field!" 1 Samuel 17:43-44
David said, "You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. This day the Lord will hand you over to me, and I’ll strike you down and cut off your head. Today…the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel. All those gathered here will know that it is not by sword or spear the Lord saves; for the battle is the Lord’s, and He will give you all into our hands," 1 Samuel 17:45-47
As Goliath moved closer to attack him, David ran quickly toward the battle line to meet him. Reaching into his bag and taking out a stone, he slung it and struck the Philistine on the forehead. His forehead was the only part of him that wasn’t covered by armor. The stone sank into his forehead, and he fell face down on the ground. David ran and stood over him. He took hold of the Philistine’s sword and killed him.
When the Philistines saw that their hero, Goliath, was dead, they turned and ran. The Israelites ran after them and killed many Philistines that day. God’s people had won because David was brave enough to believe that God would help him kill Goliath, the Philistine.
Later on David became king. God said about David, “I have found David son of Jesse a man after my own heart; he will do everything I want him to do.” Acts 13:22 Wouldn’t that be wonderful to have God say that about us–that we are people after His own heart that will do that He wants us to do.
