Bible Memory Verse
“…Blessed is the man who will eat at the feast in the kingdom of God.” Luke 14:15
Luke 14:16-24
“Jesus replied, “A certain man was preparing a great banquet (feast or special dinner) and invited many guests. (17 At the time of the banquet he sent his servant to tell those who were invited, “Come, for everything is now ready.”
(18 But they all made excuses. The first said, ‘I have bought a field and must go and see it. Please excuse me.’
(19 Another said, ‘I have bought some oxen (an animal like cows that were used in Jesus’ time by farmers to do the work that tractors do today) and am on my way to get them. Please excuse me.’
(20 Still another said, ‘I just got married, so I can’t come.’
(21 The servant of the house came back and reported this to his master. Then the owner of the house became angry and ordered his servant, ‘Go out quickly into the streets and alleys of the town and bring in the poor, the crippled, the blind and the lame.’
(22 ‘Sir,’ the servant said, ‘what you ordered has been done, but there is still room.’
(23 Then the master told his servant, ‘Go out to roads and country lanes and make them come in, so that my house may be full. (24 I tell you not one of those men who were invited will get a taste of my banquet.’”
1. What did the master invite people to? (banquet or party)
2. Why couldn’t they come? (no good reason)
3. What did the master tell his servant to do when these men wouldn’t come? (invited anyone who would come)
4. What did the master say would happen to men who had been invited and wouldn’t come? (would not even get a taste of the banquet)
5. Compare this parable to the parable of the wedding banquet (Matthew 22:1-14)
6. What does the banquet symbolize? (marriage supper of the Lamb)
Revelation 19:6-9
“Then I heard what sounded like a great multitude, like the roar of rushing waters and like loud peals of thunder, shouting: ‘Hallelujah! For our Lord God Almighty reigns. Let us rejoice and be glad and give him glory! For the wedding of the Lamb has come, and his bride has made herself ready. Fine linen, bright and clean, was given her to ear.’ ( Fine linen stands for the righteous acts of the saints.) Then the angel said to me. ‘Blessed are those who are invited to the wedding supper of the Lamb.’ And he added ‘These are the true words of God.’”
7. How do we accept the invitation to the marriage supper of the Lamb?
John 20:31
“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”
John 3:16
“These are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.”
Romans 3:21-26
“This righteous from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Jesus Christ. God presented him as a sacrifice of atonement, through faith in his blood. He did this to demonstrate his justice at the present time, so as to be just and the one who justifies the man who has faith in Jesus.”
Romans 6:23
“For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Romans 10:9-10
“…That if you confess with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your heart that you confess and are saved.”
Ephesians 2:4-5
“But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved.”
8. What excuses do people make to not accept God’s gift of eternal life?
Jesus is going to prepare a great banquet for us when we go to heaven, but some people who He invited will say, “No”. They do not love Jesus. These people, like the men that the master invited to the banquet but refused to come, will not be allowed into heaven.
