Bible Memory Verse:

WHAT IS A MIRACLE? (a wonderful happening that is beyond the laws of nature-as when Jesus healed the paralyzed man or the blind man). This week’s story is about a marvelous miracles Jesus did.

Jesus had some special friends–Mary, Martha and their brother Lazarus who lived in the town of Bethany. Whenever He was passing through Bethany He would visit them. One day Lazarus became very sick. His sisters sent word to Jesus, “Lord, the one you love is sick.”

When He heard this, Jesus said, “This sickness will not end in death. No, it is for God’s glory so that God’s Son may be glorified through it.” Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. Yet when He heard that Lazarus was sick, he stayed where He was two more days.

Then He said to His disciples, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep; but I am going to wake him up.”

His disciples replied, “Lord, if he sleeps, he will get better.” Jesus had been speaking of his death, but His disciples thought He meant natural sleep.

So then He told them plainly,

Thomas (a disciples) said to the rest of the disciples, “Let us also go that we may die with Him.” He said this because the Jews were trying to kill Jesus.

When Jesus and His disciples arrived in Bethany, they found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb four days. Bethany was less than two miles from the important city of Jerusalem and many Jews had come to comfort Martha and Mary on the loss of their brother. When Martha heard that Jesus was coming she went out to meet Him, but Mary stayed at home.

“Lord,” Martha said to Jesus, “if You had been here, my brother would not have died. But I know that even now God will give you whatever you ask.”

Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.”

Martha answered, “I know he will rise in the resurrection at the last day.”

Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?”

"Yes, Lord,” she told him, “I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who was to come into the world.”

And after she had said this, she went back and called her sister Mary aside. “The Teacher is here,” she said, “and is asking for you.” When Mary heard this, she got up quickly and went to him. Now Jesus had not yet entered the village, but was still at the place where Martha had met him. When the Jews who had been with Mary in the house, comforting her, noticed how quickly she got up and went out, they followed her, supposing she was going to the tomb to mourn there.

When Mary reached the place where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet and said, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.”

When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come along with her also weeping, he was deeply moved in spirit and troubled. “Where have you laid him?” he asked.

"Come and see, Lord,” they replied.

Jesus wept.

Then the Jews said, “See how he loved him!”

But some of them said, “Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man have kept this man from dying?” Jesus, once more deeply moved, came to the tomb. It was a cave with a stone laid across the entrance. “Take away the stone,” he said.

“’But, Lord,’ said Martha, the sister of the dead man, ‘by this time there is a bad odor, for he has been there four days.’”

Then Jesus said, "Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God?"

So they took away the stone. Then Jesus looked up and said, "Father, I thank you that you have heard me. I knew that you always hear me, but I said this for the benefit of the people standing here, that they may believe that you sent me."

When he had said this, Jesus called in a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!” The dead man came out, his hands and feet wrapped with strips of linen, and a cloth around his face.

Jesus said to them, “Take off the grave clothes and let him go.” Therefore many of the Jews who had come to visit Mary, and had seen what Jesus did, put their faith in him.

DOES JESUS HEAL PEOPLE TODAY? DOES JESUS RAISE PEOPLE FROM THE DEAD TODAY? (Yes, in the Name of Jesus)

CHARACTERS: Jolly the Giraffe, Polly the Polar Bear, Leo the Lion

JOLLY: (enter) Hi, kids! Has this been a good week for you? (wait for response)

POLLY: (enter) Hi, kids and Jolly.

JOLLY: Hi, Polly. Remember, this week we were all supposed to tell about something we are especially thankful to Jesus for.

POLLY: I’m especially thankful for winter. I never get too hot in winter.

LEO: (enter) Winter! I don’t care much for winter! I like it hot. Bye the way, hi everyone.

JOLLY: Hi, Leo. I guess we are all different.

POLLY: What are you especially thankful for, Leo?

LEO: I’m especially thankful that we can go to heaven someday if we know Jesus. Remember our Bible Memory Verse: “…He who believes in me shall live even though he dies…” John 11:25 It will be just the right temperature there for everyone.

JOLLY: That’s right. It will be perfect in heaven. And Jesus can do miracles for us even on earth. After hearing today’s story, I’m reminded that Jesus can heal us, even raise people from the dead. He healed my neck once.

POLLY: Really?

JOLLY: Yes, my neck was hurting for weeks. As you know, my neck covers quite a bit of my body. Well, finally I asked a lot of my friends to pray for me, and I was healed. The pain never came back.

LEO: Maybe, we should ask the kids what they are especially thankful for.

POLLY: And we should ask the leaders, too.

JOLLY: Those are good ideas. OK kids and leaders, what are you especially thankful for? (wait quite awhile for responses)

POLLY: It’s wonderful what God does for us.

LEO: God is always watching over us. Sometimes we don’t realize how much He does for us.

JOLLY: We should praise and thank God all the time. The Bible says, “In everything give thanks.” 1 Thessalonians 5:18

LEO: We would be happier if we thought about the all the good things Jesus does for us and not complain.

POLLY: Yes, Jesus loves us so much He gives us good things even if they might not seem good at the time.

LEO; I’m going to try and do that—give thanks in everything.

POLLY: Me, too!

JOLLY: Let’s all try to do that. Another thing I’m especially thankful for—that I know all of you, kids! I’m so glad we came to know you.

POLLY & LEO: Me, too!

JOLLY: Good-bye, kids! See you next week!

POLLY & LEO: Good-bye, kids!
