Bible Memory Verse:

“…Repent and believe the good news!” Mark 1:15

Jesus had come to earth for at least two important reasons. The first thing Jesus came to do was to die to pay the for man’s sins. God is a holy or totally good God and no one with any sin in them can enter heaven. Jesus, who never sinned, was going to pay for all the bad things that people have done. Then if they will accept His love and His free gift of having their sins paid for, they can go to heaven.

The second reason Jesus came to earth was to tell people how they could come to know God and someday be with Him in heaven. Our memory verse is “Repent and believe the good news.” DOES ANYONE KNOW WHAT REPENT MEANS? Repent means stop sinning. Turn from doing bad things and do good things. Change your mind so that you see sin the way God does.

DOES ANYONE KNOW WHAT THE GOOD NEWS IS? The good news is that by believing Jesus is the Son of God sent from heaven, we can go to heaven. If we believe in Jesus we will try to obey Him. If we really believe we will obey. The Bible says that demons believe and are afraid. They believe, but they don’t obey.

Jesus knew He wasn’t going to be on earth very long–only a little over three years. He had to make an important decision. He had to choose men that would be able to tell others the good news after He had died on the cross.

He did what we should do when we have an important decision. He prayed. He prayed all night. That means that He talked to God the Father and God the Father talked to Him.

After Jesus had spent all night in prayer, He chose His twelve disciples. "Disciple" means follower. A disciple of Jesus is one who followed Him and who believed what He taught. Jesus didn’t choose the smartest people or the best looking or the most talented or the best educated or the richest. He chose the men that He knew God the Father wanted Him to choose. God can see the hearts of men, what they are really like inside.

Today I am going to tell you how Jesus met the twelve disciples He chose.

John the Baptist, who came before Jesus, to make the way ready for Him had disciples or men that followed him. One day John saw Jesus and said, “Look, the Lamb of God.” John 1:36

When two of his disciples heard him say this, they followed Jesus. Turning around, Jesus saw them following Him and asked, “What do you want?”

They said, “Teacher, where are you staying?”

“Come,” he replied, “and you will see.”

So they went and saw where He was staying and spent that day with Him.

Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of the two who heard what John had said and followed Jesus. The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother, Simon, and tell him, “We have found the Messiah” (that is the Christ). The people were waiting for the Messiah or Christ.

Then he brought Simon to Jesus, who looked at him and said, “You are Simon son of John. You will be called Peter(Peter-when translated means “Rock”).

The next day Jesus decided to leave for Galilee. Finding Philip, He said to him, “Follow me.”

Philip found Nathanael (Bartholomew) and told him, “We have found the one whom Moses wrote about in the Law, and about whom the prophets also wrote-Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.”

“Nazareth, can anything good come from there?” Nathanael asked

“Come and see,” said Philip.

When Jesus saw Nathanael coming, He said, "Here is a true Israelite, in whom, there is nothing false."

“How did you know me?" Nathanael asked.

Jesus answered, "I saw you while you were still under the fig tree before Philip called you."

Nathanael declared, "You are the Son of God; you are the King of Israel."

Jesus said, "You believe because I told you I saw you under the fig tree. You will see greater things than that. I tell you the truth, you shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of God.” John 1:35-50

One day as Jesus was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret, with the people crowding around him listening to the word of God, he saw at the water’s edge two boats, left there by the fishermen, who were washing their nets. He got into one of the nets, the one belonging to Simon, and asked him to put out a little from shore. Then he sat down and taught the people from the boat.

When He had finished speaking, He said to Simon, "Put out into the deep water, and let down the nets for a catch.”

Simon answered, “Master, we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets.”

When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break. So they signaled their partners in the other boat to come and help them, and they came and filled their boats so full that they began to sink.

When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus’ knees and said, “Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man.” For he and all of his companions were astonished at the catch of fish they had taken, and so were Simon’s brother, Andrew (Mark 1:16) and James and John, the sons of Zebedee, Simon’s partner.

Then Jesus said to Simon, “Don’t be afraid; from now on you will catch men.” Luke 5:10 "Come, follow me, and I will make you fishers of men." Matthew 4:19 So they pulled their nets up on shore, left everything and followed Him.

When Jesus asked Peter and Andrew, James and John to follow Him, they dropped what they were doing and followed Him. This meant that instead of listening a life where they always went home to sleep in their own beds or to eat the meals that their families prepared for them they often went with Jesus from town to town. Jesus asked them to become fishers of men. WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE A FISHER OF MEN? (A fisherman catches fish–a fisher of men would catch men for God. Jesus meant that from now on they were to tell people about God.)

Later, Jesus, saw a tax collector named Matthew or Levi, in his booth where He collected taxes. WHAT IS A TAX COLLECTOR? (Collects money to give to the government) "Follow me,” Jesus said to him and Matthew got up, left everything and followed Him.

Soon others followed Jesus. They were Judas, Simon the Zealot, Thaddaeus, James (Son of Alphaeus) and Judas Iscariot, who later betrayed (turned against) Him.

Jesus picked 12 men to be His special disciples or followers/helpers. They followed Jesus’ example and helped Him tell others about God. Jesus knew He would not be on earth very long. Soon He would be returning to His Father in heaven. He needed to prepare some men to continue His work after He was gone. But before they could carry on His work, they would need to learn more about His power and plan for all men. During Jesus’ time on earth, He taught His followers many things.

Jesus still calls us to be His disciples today. Sometimes He asks people to be pastors, missionaries or evangelists. But everyone who knows Jesus is called to tell others about Him. Jesus loves all people, and He wants everyone to have a chance to know about Him. It is so important that each person will have to chance to choose if he wants to believe in Jesus. If we believe in Jesus we will obey Him. He loves us so much that He died for us and gives us the opportunity to live forever in heaven.

Bible Memory Verse:

“…Repent and believe the good news!” Mark 1:15

CHARACTERS: Jolly the Giraffe, Polly the Polar Bear, Leo the Lion

JOLLY, POLLY, LEO: (enter) Hi, kids! (wait for answers)

LEO: I would have loved to have been one of Jesus’ disciples and traveled with Him everyplace.

POLLY: And have seen miracles and heard his teaching.

JOLLY: We can be His disciples today, you know.

LEO: I guess that is what missionaries are. That’s why they face hardships and trouble because they are following Jesus.

JOLLY: If we ask Him to come into our hearts and obey Him, we are His disciples.

LEO: You’re right! I guess I am a disciple. I’m a missionary, too. I’m a lion from Africa and here I am—in Canada telling people about Jesus!

POLLY: Jolly is from Africa, too, and I’m from the COLD north!

LEO: Everybody everyplace needs to hear the good news! Anyone who will say to others, “…Repent and believe the good news!” Mark 1:15 is a disciple!

JOLLY: If we want to hear Jesus’ teaching, all we have to do is read the Bible.

LEO: And if we don’t understand we should ask Jesus to help us. His Holy Spirit will help us understand.

JOLLY: That’s right Leo! In fact, we SHOULD ask Jesus to help us understand His Word, the Bible. There are some people that read Jesus’ words and say they mean what they don’t mean. These are false teachers.

POLLY: Yes, false teachers with false teaching can confuse us and lead us in the wrong direction.

LEO: Jesus said to those who had believed him, "If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples.” John 8:31 That means that false teachers won’t act the way Jesus wants them to. That helps to know that someone is a false teacher even when they say they believe in Jesus.

JOLLY: Right after that Jesus said, “Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free." John 8:32 False teachers often make rules that just trap us even though they sound good.

POLLY: I sure don’t want to be trapped and led in the wrong direction by false teachers. What can we do to protect ourselves against false teachers?

LEO: That’s why we need to ask Jesus into our heart—so we are His children and He is right there to answer us when we pray. We need to ask Him to forgive our sin so our sin is not separating us from Him.

JOLLY: Then we should read the Bible and go to a good Bible believing church. But we don’t need to be afraid of false teachers. Jesus promises to protect us from them if we follow Him.

LEO: I guess that leads us back to being a disciple. A disciple follows Jesus and is protected from false teachers.

POLLY: THAT’s exciting!

JOLLY: We have to go, but remember, kids. We are Jesus’ disciples if we love Him, and someday He is coming back for us and taking us to heaven!

LEO & POLLY: Yah!

JOLLY, POLLY, LEO: Good-bye kids!
