* LESSON

* LESSON: JOHN THE BAPTIST (BIRTH AND BAPTISTM):

Bible Memory Verse:

At the time of Herod, king of Judea, a priest named Zechariah was chosen by lot as was the custom of the priesthood, to go into the temple of the Lord and burn incense. This was a great honor—it only happened once in a lifetime and only to some priests. A rope was tied around the priest’s leg so that he was struck dead because he was not doing what was right, he could be pulled out. Have children draw straws and put cape (or other symbol of honor) on person who wins. This is choosing by lot. The one chosen is chosen by picking the longest straw or the right number, etc. In our Bible story today, Zechariah the priest was chosen to go into the temple by lot. When Zechariah was inside the temple, an angel appeared to him. It had been many years (400) since an angel had appeared to anyone, at least that we know about.. When Zechariah saw the angel he was gripped with fear. But the angel said to him: “Do not be afraid, Zechariah; your prayer has been heard. Your wife, Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you are to give him the name John. He will be a joy and delight to you, and many will rejoice because of his birth. Many of the people of Israel will he bring back to the Lord their God.”

Zechariah asked the angel, “How can I be sure of this? I am an old man and my wife is well along in years.”
When it was time for Elizabeth to have her baby, she gave birth to a son. They asked her what she would name the child and she said, “He is to be called John.”

They asked Zechariah what he would name the child. He asked for a writing tablet and wrote, “His name is John.” Immediately he could speak and he began praising God.

Everyone who heard about this story wondered what all that had happened meant.

This baby grew up to be called John the Baptist. It had been told many years ahead of time that there would be a messenger sent to tell everyone that Jesus, the Savior of the world, was coming. The messenger that God sent was John the Baptist.

“I will send my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way”–”a voice of one calling in the desert, ‘Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him.’” Mark 1:2-3 (Malachi 3:1 & Isaiah 40:3)

When John the Baptist grew up, he lived in the desert. He wore clothes of camel’s hair with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts (grasshoppers) and wild honey. He went about telling people to repent (change their minds so that they would obey God) because the Lord was coming. He said, “After me will come one more powerful than I, the throngs of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie.” John 1:27 (Jesus is coming and He is so much more special than me that I am not good enough to untie His shoes) Large crowds gathered around John. They asked him what they should do to get ready for the Lord. He said that the person who had two coats should share with the person with none, and the person who had food should share with the person with none.

Tax collectors asked John what they should do to get ready for the Lord. John told them not to collect any more money than what they were supposed to.

Soldiers asked John what they should do in order to get ready for the coming of the Lord. John told them not to steal from people or to accuse them of things they didn’t do. They were to be happy with their pay.

When people decided to repent of their sins (change their mind to know that sin was wrong and stop sinning) then John would baptise them. He was getting them ready for when Jesus would come. Since they were sorry for their sins, they would be ready to hear the good news that Jesus would bring.

We have all sinned. Jesus died on the cross so He could pay the penalty for our sin. Only Jesus can take away our sin. We just have to ask Him to take away our sin, and be willing to live like He wants us to.

* HANDOUT:

JOHN THE BAPTIST—Part 1

Bible Memory Verse:

Words to choose from: HONEY, BAPTISM, JOHN, REPENT, SINNING, ANGEL, DESERT, PRIEST, JESUS.
The angel answered, “I am Gabriel. I stand in the presence of God, and I have been sent to speak to you and to tell you this good news. And now you will be silent and not able to speak until the day this happens, because you did not believe my words, which will come true at their proper time.” Luke 1:20

When Zechariah came out of the temple and could not speak, the people realized he had seen a vision. When his time of service had been completed, he returned home. After this his wife Elizabeth became pregnant. This was six months before the angel, Gabriel, appeared to Mary, the mother of Jesus. Mary, the mother of Jesus, and Elizabeth, the mother of John, were relatives.

They said to her, ”There is no one among our relatives who has that name.” (It was the custom at that time to name children after their father or relatives).

John was called John the Baptist because he baptized people. DO YOU KNOW WHAT IT MEANS TO BE BAPTIZED? HAVE YOU EVER SEEN ANYONE BAPTIZED? Usually a pastor or minister (but it doesn’t have to be), puts people under the water and brings them up again to show that they have given up their sinful life and are going to follow Jesus. Jesus hadn’t come yet so John baptized people who wanted to show that they were going to stop doing things their own way and start doing things God’s way. He told them to stop sinning because the kingdom of God was coming: “Paul said, ‘John’s baptism was a baptism of repentance. He told the people to believe in the one coming after him, that is, Jesus.” Acts 19:4
